Plants,microbes and insects are inseparable components of ecosystems.Here we show that plant allelochemicals mediate tritrophic interactions among the three types of organisms.Plant allelochemicals e.g.coumarin,furocoumarins,flavone,and indole-3-carbinal strongly induced transcripts of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases(P450s)in midguts and fatbodies of polyphagous herbivores Helicoverpa zea,H.armigera,Spodoptera litura,etc,which in turn led to substantial reduction of the toxicity of mycotoxins produced by microbial pathogens against insects.
