蓝藻水华是巢湖而临的重要环境问题。淡水藻类常受磷限制，而含高磷的富营养化湖泊中蓝藻的生长是否受磷限制尚小明晰。浮游植物可分泌胞外磷酸酶催化水解有机磷来克服磷限制。巢湖周年每月浮游植物胞外酶荧光标记研究结果表明，浮游植物应答磷的限制具种的特异性。
