Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a satellite virus of hepatitis B virus (HBV).HDV causes severe liver disease in humans when super-infected or co-infected with HBV.Hepatitis delta antigen (HDAg) is the only known viral protein that consists of two forms:a small form (HDAg-S) that is required for the viral replication and a large form (HDAg-L) that is essential for the viral assembly.The two HDAgs are identical except for a 19-amino-acid extension at the C terminus of HDAg-L.HDV-related RNAs of sizes longer than genomic length,but not DNA intermediates,have been detected in the nucleus of infected liver cells.In addition,the viral RNA can undergo self-cleavage and self-ligation.
