Longitudinal studies revealed characteristic age-related patterns in the long-term regulation of energy balance.Aging obesity involves two major trends: significant body weight gain (fat mass) of middle-aged subjects, followed by anorexia of the old populations with dramatic loss of active tissues (20-40 % loss of skeletal muscles), leading to sarcopenic obesity.Non-obese old individuals are predisposed to cachexia/sarcopenia.In the background of these trends complex age-related shifts in the peripheral and central catabolic and anabolic neurohumoral peptide systems may be assumed.
