The method used to identify infants with a serious threat of irreversible brain injury must be very simple, easily applicable and available in every hospital where the critically ill infants are hospitalized.Cerebral ultrasonography is a safe screening tool that can easily be repeatedly applied in newborn infants.At present there are few suitable markers of the severity of hypoxic-ischemic injury during the first hours after asphyxia.The full clinical picture of brain damage following hypoxic-ischaernic insults develops after a delay, being preceded by a free interval or temporary improvement of clinical condition.Exact evaluation of the clinical picture is also difficult because these children are often treated with sedatives.
