High-throughput microarrays constitute a group of technologies characterized by the common availability of m easuring hundreds or thousands of items,including DNA sequences,RNA transcripts,or proteins within a singleexperiment.Hybridization-based methods and the miniaturized microarray format constitute together an extremely versatile platform for both static and dynamic views of DNA structure,as well as RNA or protein expression patterns in cultured cells,tissue and body fluids specimens.Comparison of representative in vitro systems or clinical samples allows molecular characterization of the distinct steps along disease progression.The most widespread use of this technology to date has been the analysis of gene expression.There is an increasingly broad range of additional applications for DNA microarrays,including genotyping polymorphisms and mutations,or ide ntifying structural alterations using arrayed comparative genome hybridization.
