The maintenance of the integrity of the human genome requires the replication of DNA with stringent fidelity during cell division, and the detection and repair of DNA damage.Human DNA Polymerase, like other replicative DNA polymerases, not only synthesizes DNA with high fidelity, but also possesses a 3 to 5 exonuclease activity that removes mismatched nucleotides.The cellular response to DNA damage involves complex signaling mechanisms that lead to cell cycle checkpoints as well as recognition of DNA damage and the recruitment of DNA repair proteins.
