The inhibition effect of two derivatives of 1,10 phenanthroline:2,9-dimethyl-1,1O-phenanthroline ( DMPHEN) and 5,6-epoxy-5,6-dihydro-1,10 phenanthroline ( EPOPHEN) on corten A steel( CS) in 12% HCl was studied using potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy ( EIS) and weight loss techniques. The surface morphology of CS was examined with scanning electron microscopy ( SEM).The experimental results show that both DMPHEN and EPOPHEN are good inhibitors for CS in the acidic medium and the inhibition efficiency increases as the concentration of the inhibitors was increased. The polarization measurements indicate that the studied compounds act as mixed type inhibitor.Thermodynamic parameters ie free energy of adsorption, enthalpy, entropy and activation energy were calculated, the values of these parameters showed good interaction. Results from quantum chemical calculations were used to explain the mechanism of the adsorption process.
