Background:Apple fruit can elicit both mild and severe allergic reactions in atopic patients.Four classes of apple allergens (Mal d 1,-2,-3 and-4) have been reported to be the causing agents.Mal d 1 is a major allergen causing birch pollen-related food allergy in the Northern and Central Europe because it is cross-reactive to the homologous and sensitizing allergen Bet v 1 from birch.Mal d 1 and Bet v 1 belong to the PR-10 family ofpathogenesis-related proteins.Mal d 2 is a thaumatin-like protein of the PR-5 gene family which has recently been shown to be a newpanallergen.Mal d 3 is a non-specific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP) and represents a major allergen for Mediterranean atopic populations.Mal d 4 (profilin) have been recognized as panallergens in both pollen and fruit.From clinical records,apple cultivars have been found to be significantly different in their allergenicity.For each class of the allergen genes,there have been some DNA sequences in the GenBank/EMBL databases.
