Recent developments in the areas of nanostructure design and synthesis, cell biology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology allowed development of MR imaging at a cellular level.These innovative technologies enabled production of targeted contrast agents, comprising paramagnetic nano-particles (NP) conjugated with specific antibodies.Such designed contrast agents effect proton relaxation times of the targeted tissue protons thus provide selective contrast enhancing diagnostic capabilities of MRI and improving its specificity.Beside paramagnetic NPs affecting protons,fluorine (19F) can be also used as an MR marker.For example, Herceptin, a common breast cancer drug, can be conjugated e.g.with perfluorocarbons (PFC), forming biocompatible fluorine emulsions.Because there are no endogenous 19F nuclei in cells, no background signal is present when targeted contrast agents containing 19F are administered and bind to extracellular cancer receptors, such as HER-2.
