The envelope glycoprotein gpl20/gp412 of HIV binds to cellular receptors and mediates fusion between the viral and cellular membranes.This process is an attractive target for drugs to prevent HIV-1 infecting target cells.Consequently,.we established a novel syncytium formation system,performed screening using this system,and found a potent anti-HIV protein,actinohivin (AH),produced by the newly-discovered actinomycete Longispora albida gen.nov.,sp.,nov.AH consists of 114-amino-acid residues and is composed of highly conserved internal sequence triplication (segments 1,2,and 3).
