In recent years,considerable progress has been made in the direct estimation of air–sea fluxes of momentum,heat,and mass,using the eddy covariance method.In contrast to less direct methods,such as the inertial dissipation method or the application of bulk formulae,the eddy covariance method requires precise corrections to be applied to compensate for variations in the position,velocity,and attitude of the measurement sensors,to avoid systmatic bias in the estimated fluxes.In addition,the instrument platform should be located sufficiently far from the water surface,so that wave-induced flow perturbations do not affect the flux estimates,and any oscillatory motion of the platform should not be correlated with the fluid motions.
