Metabolic syndrome (MS) is characterized by insulin resistance,visceral obesity,and hypertension as well as by a cluster of diabetic atherosclerosis risk factors including disturbed lipid and lipoprotein metabolism,endothelial dysfunction,and elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines.MS is likely to have a marked impact on the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes worldwide in the next two decades.
