An extensive study has been carried out to understand,model and predict the prevailing wind power potential in and around the Kathmandu valley as Nepal Government put forward its plan to develop 20 MW of wind power based on the scattered short-term studies despite the complete failure of 12 KW Nagarkot Wind Power Project.Prevailing wind characteristics were measured with a Scintec Co.MFAS sodar system at seven so-called potential sites for a complete year during August 2012 to August 2013 including Nagarkot and the observations made at half a dozen of surface observatories distributed over the valley were taken into consideration to complement the numerical simulation with the application of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) modeling system.A very good correlation between the observation and simulation has been achieved.Wind power density maps for Kathmandu valley have been developed at 30,60 and 90 meters height above the surface.The maximum annual average wind power density over 51 km2 area that covers the whole Kathmandu valley and its immediate surroundings turns out to be only 80Wm-2 for all the three heights above the surface.It is,thus,suggested to search wind power potential in other parts of the country rather than to make worthless investment in and around the Kathmandu valley.
