Climate change has been a global environmental issue which is challenging water resources management and flood defense as well as ecological protection in practice.Considering the potential impacts of sea level rise and changes in typhoon-induced storm surge, an integrated adaptation strategy to climate change for eastern coastal area of China has been addressed to guarantee water securities including flood control, water supply, and coastal ecological restoration.(1) For flood defense purpose, both the constructive and the non-constructive measures should be enhanced, which include, to investigate storm surge defense capacity of coastal dyke, to re-constitute design standard of surge-defense dyke, and to construct tide barrier,to improve early warning and forecasting system for typhoon and storm surge, and to perfect emergency response and rescue schemes.(2) For water supply purposes, adaptation measures consist of the followings: to plan alternative water sources including storm harvest; waste water treatment, and sea water desalination etc, to construct water-saving society with improving efficiency of water utilization, to educate public and improve awareness of water crisis, to build tide-defense dyke for protecting water intakes from sea water intrusion, and to relocate necessary water intakes for ensuring water supply security.(3) For coastal ecological restoration purposes, adaptation measures contain the followings: to develop coastal beach protection plan, to construct monitoring system of water quality and coastal ecological system, and to improve public awareness of ecological protection.
