Management of hyperthyroidism is debated.The ultimate goal of therapy in hyperthyroidism is to alleviate systemic symptoms and restore long term euthyroidism.Treatment policies vary between countries in Europe and, within a given country, from institution to institution.Three major treatment modalities are available: antithyroid drugs (ATD), radioactive iodine (RAI) administration, and surgery.Anti-thyroid drugs are rarely successful in the long-term.Thyroidectomy may offer definitive treatment of the disorder, but patients will be subjected to the risk of surgery as well as the possible complications of recurrent nerve injury and hypocalcemia.RAI can cures hyperthyroidism but can also lead to unpredictable effects, the risk of persistent (or recurrent) thyrotoxicosis is estimated to vary between 5%-25%.We report our experience with tbyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism at a tertiary center.The result of retrospective database of 273 consecutives patients who underwent surgery for toxic lnultinodular goiter (TMNG) and Gravess disease (GD) from 1985 to 2008 will be presented and discussed.
