Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, is a well known hazardous organic compound and has been reported to have carcinogenic properties.Because of the wide distribution of BaP, which derived from incomplete combustion of organic matters and geochemical process, humans are easily exposed to this compound, such as drinking water and dieting. Therefore, the rapid and high throughput detection of BaP is of great importance.Analysis methods for BaP mainly involve liquid chromatography coupled to fluorescence (LC-FLD) or ultraviolet-visible detection (LC-UV), or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).However, up to now, soft ionization techniques such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), have not been applied to the analysis and detection of BaP due to its distinct aromatic structure which is hard to ionize.
