Since the Cyanobacteria were formally included(more or less by mistake)in the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes(ICNP)at the meetings of the ICSP in Sydney in 1999 by modification of General Consideration 5,many problems have arisen. Some of the provisions of the ICNP and of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants(ICN)are incompatible [4],and the ICNP has not yet reciprocated Article 45(1)of the ICN.Some interim solutions proposed are incompatible with the current rules of the Codes [1].Moreover,the widespread misconception that the botanicaland the bacteriologicalCodes deal with taxonomy, phylogeny and classification led to a number of erroneous statements in the taxonomical literature on the Cyanobacteria [2].A Special Committee on the Harmonization of the Nomenclature of Cyanobacteria between the Botanical and the Bacteriological Codes has been appointed in 2012,but its activity has been minimal. Two radically different proposals to solve the current problems have been submitted to the ICSP [3,5] and are waiting to be discussed.
