The development of high performance centrifugal pumps is complex task which involves different objectives and constraints coming form various disciplines such as hydrodynamics, structural and rotor dynamics, vibration and manufacturing technology etc.For optimization design of a high performance centrifugal pump, all the above disciplines need to be incorporated thus including the interactions between different disciplines during design.Among the design objectives of the detailed hydrodynamics passage optimization, efficiency and cavitations are only two of many considerations in tradition.A good design must also satisfy the hydrodynamics constraints as well as the mechanical and manufacturing constraints. This paper presents an approach to design high performance centrifugal pumps with Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), which includes that from preliminary design based on basic hydraulic design rulesof a centrifugal pump according the given operating conditions, complex geometric modeling for definition of impeller and volute, flow simulation and visualization with CFD and flow passage shape optimization based on analytically-driven design methodology, to mechanical stresses and rotor dynamics analysis during a centrifugal pump design.Designs can be quickly evaluated for parameters such as efficiency, outlet pressure and inlet suction, static stress and natural frequencies of rotor and designers can use flow simulation and visualization to identify areas of recirculation and cavitations that result from poor volute tongue design for improving and modifying blade and volute design.Designs can be tested in the digital development environment until best performance and productivity are achieved. As an example, a high performance Turbo-Pump (TOP) in the oil-supply system of a large steam turbine set was designed with the presented methodology, it has proven that is cost effective pump designs with state-of-the-art performance and reliability.
