High efficiency of 12.3% has been achieved for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), but DSSC based on liquid electrolyte have many practical problems such as leakage, desorption of dye, erosion of electrode, which blocks its rapid commercial application.Replacing the liquid electrolyte by a solid-state medium seems to be a solution to these problems.Unfortunately, the counter electrode of the conventional all-solid-state DSSC is made by evaporating Au or other noble metals, which needs not only expensive noble metals but also costly equipment for high vacuum, which should raise the costs of production.Obviously, a low cost counter materials technology expects to be developed urgently. With the mesoscopic carbon counter electrode, we developed a monolithic solid-state DSSC module with simpler manufacturing process, especially the sealing method, lower material cost and innate high stability, which offers a promising prospect for the commercial application. Moreover, a Panels consisting of 80 10cm× 10cm all-solid-state monolithic DSC modules running a LED display was exhibited in the inauguration of Michael Gr(a)tzel Center for Mesoscopic Solar Cells and the first International Symposium for Mesoscopic Solar Cells (IMSC2010) at Wuhan of China.
