Objective: The study aimed at evaluating the effect of pharmaceutical care interventions on medication adherence of patients with primary hypertension. Methods: A prospective, randomized, controlled trail of 60 patients was carried out, each patient was followed up for 3 months.Medication adherence was measured by the patients' medication compliance record card and MMAS score.Dosing compliance (DC)and timing compliance (TC)were calculated for each patient. Results: Pharmaceutical care of hypertension patients led to a significant increase in compliance with the antihypertensive therapy. The mean DC and TC of the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group. The intervention group demonstrated a higher percentage of patients with high adherence (72.41%)at 3 months, whereas the control group hardly had changes in medication compliance. Conclusion: Patients who received pharmaceutical care showed significantly better compliance with their antihypertensive medication than patients who received only traditional patient care.Pharmaceutical care proved to be an effective intervention that should be implemented in hypertension care.
