  Macroporous ZnAl2O4 spinel monolith with a well-defined macropores was successfully prepared using the sol-gel process accompanied by phase separation in the presence of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) and propylene oxide (PO).Propylene oxide (PO) was used as an acid scavenger to mediate the gelation process,while PEO worked as a phase-separation inducer.The as-prepared samples were characterized by means of XRD, TG/DTA, SEM, FTIR, and BET.The mechanism of the epoxide-mediated sol-gel reaction and PEO induced phase separation was also discussed.The results show that the as-prepared monolith possesses an interesting pore structure with co-continuous solid skeletons and well-defined macropores.The dried gel is amorphous, and the ZnAl2O4crystalline phase is obtained after heat treatment at 600℃ in air.Heat-treatment does not basically spoil the macrostructure of the monoliths.
