Crannogs are small to medium sized artificially constructed lake-dwellings commonly found in Ireland and Scotland which were constructed mainly during the Iron Age and Medieval Period. These sites have served various purposes, ranging from (royal) occupation sites to simple workshops. The wide distribution of crannogs, both temporally and spatially, complicates the interpretation further.Only one previous study has applied palaeoecological techniques to crannogs hence this project aims to deepen our understanding of crannog occupation histories of several sites by analysing the adjacent lake sediments.
