Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) has been established as a cost effective, fast, and more environmentally friendly technique than HPLC.The principal reason for SFCs desirable attributes is that in SFC carbon dioxide is the primary solvent, that diffusion coefficients in CO2 are much larger than in organic solvents or their aqueous solutions, and that carbon dioxide does not directly impact the environment as much as organic solvents while its use reduces the need for petroleum based chemicals in separation science.
