To study in depth the influence of driver braking operation on rear-end collision avoidance under emergency situations, we extracted rear-end conflict cases before urban intersection recorded by video driver recorder, and analyzed the characteristic of driver steady-state following and the characteristic of driver braking operation under emergency situations before urban intersection.Rear-end conflict cases were divided into two types: lead vehicle urgent deceleration to stop and lead vehicle continues to travel after decelerating suddenly.Under the conditions of predefined parameters including inter-vehicle distance, lead vehicle velocity, following vehicle velocity and the deceleration of lead vehicle, the relationship between the driver reaction time and the braking deceleration was simulated using the formula of critical safe distance.Further, we obtained the variables to describe the driver reaction time and the braking deceleration which could change the rear-end conflict into an actual collision.It is believed that the results are of great importance to the analysis of cause of traffic conflict and driver behavior in rear-end conflict.
