Owing to its specific binding to carbohydrates, lectins play a crucial role in pathogen recognition and clearance in vertebrate animals.Hitherto, only two types of collectins had been isolated from bony fish: mannan-binding iectin (MBL) and galactose-binding lectin (GalBL).In this study, the gene sequence of a novel collectin (Designed EALec1) from red-spotted grouper Epinephelus akaara has been obtained.The genomic structure of EALec1 and alignment of Carbohydrate recognition domain(CRD) sequence amcng three collectins implied that EALec1, is a new type collectin derived from MBL.
