Wheat blue dwarf (WBD) disease, which was first identified using molecular technique by Gu and Wu in 2005, has caused heavy losses in wheat production in northwestern China.This disease is caused by WBD phytoplasma, which is transmitted by Psammotettix striatus.Previous work indicated that WBD phytoplasma belonged to 16Sr I group.The further research showed the polymorphisms of WBD phytoplasma, three subgroups 16Sr IB, 16Sr IC and 16Sr IS were found in WBD phytoplasma.Recently,some research involved in WBD plasmids, genome and the interaction with periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) had been reported.Firstly, three plasmids of wheat blue dwarf (WBD) phytoplasma, named pWBD1 (3449 bp), pWBD2 (3601 bp) and pWBD3 (3844 bp), were cloned and confirmed by southern blot.Real time PCR analysis revealed that the copy numbers of WBD phytoplasma plasmids had tissue specificity in infected periwinkle and changed in the course of infection.
