The aim of the present work is to investigate the source and distribution of phthalate esters (PAEs) in groundwater of a subtropical city, Dongguan, South China.Groundwater and surface water samples were collected from 59 and 9 sampling sites in 2006, respectively.On each site, samples were collected at every 50cm depth under the water level.Concentrations of 6 PAEs were detected for each sample by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS).Σ6PAEs concentrations in groundwater and surface water ranged from ND (concentration was lower than the detection limit) to 6.7μg/L and from ND to 33.8μg/L, with an average value of 0.9μg/L and 11.1μg/L, respectively.
