Streptococcus mutans, the primary causative agent of dental caries, resides in the biofilm of dental plaque where it produces acid from dietary carbohydrate that demineralize tooth enamel.It has a number prominent physiological traits that allow it to persist in the oral cavity and increase its numbers in the complex plaque community.
