Scrophularia ningpoensis Hemsley (Scrophulariaceae), known as "Zhexuanshen", is used in the Chinese Materia Medica (CMM) and has a long history of widespread use in China.It is used to treat inflammation, laryngitis, tonsillitis, abscesses and constipation.Recent research revealed that this medicinal species, which has high anti-angiogenic activity, also can be used as an anticancer agent.S.ningpoensis, which is endemic to China, was named by Hemsley (1890) based on the specimens collected in Tiantong, Ningbo of Zhejiang.The species now is widely cultivated in China but over the past several decades, wild populations of S.ningpoensis have suffered rapid decline because of over-exploitation.
